There's No Place Like Me: A Solo Trip to the Land of Oz

Less than a week ago, I was in Vegas, sitting inside a story. Not watching one, mind you, but sitting inside it. I caught The Wizard of Oz at the Sphere, and I'm still thinking about it, replaying it in my head like a favorite song I can't stop humming. It was surreal in the very best way, the kind of experience that makes you feel like a kid again while also making you feel strangely, quietly grown.

I should tell you why I went, because it matters. This trip was a me-time trip, a gift to myself for my birthday last August. No group chat to coordinate, no itinerary to compromise on, no one to keep entertained. Just me, a ticket, and the radical idea that I'm someone worth treating. We spend so much of our lives showing up for everyone else that we forget the sweetest gifts are often the ones we hand ourselves. Choosing to spend time with my own company, to say "I'm worth the plane ticket, the seat, the wonder," felt like its own kind of magic. Dorothy had her tornado. I had a birthday and a little bit of boldness.

And then the lights shifted, and the world opened up. The visuals wrapped around me so completely that the walls of the room simply stopped existing. Everything felt bigger than the space that held it, as if Oz had been waiting all this time for me to walk in. The colors were so vivid and the details so crisp that every scene felt freshly painted, alive in a way that made me forget I was supposed to be an observer. The pacing hit me right away, the visuals and performance landing together so perfectly that I was pulled in before I could even think about resisting. And the sound, oh, the sound. It didn't just play in the background; it surrounded me, wrapped me up, and carried me deeper into the story until I wasn't sure where the music ended and I began.

But here's what I didn't expect: by the end, it wasn't just beautiful. It was emotional. Somewhere between the yellow brick road and the final scenes, I felt something loosen in my chest. That's the thing about stories we've known since childhood. They age with us. The Dorothy I met as a kid was chasing a way home. The me sitting in that seat was learning that home was never a place she had to find. It was something she carried the whole time.

That's the lesson I'm still turning over. The Tin Man, the Scarecrow, and the Lion each went looking for something they already had. Heart, brain, courage, all of it was inside them from the start, waiting for a journey to prove it. I think we're all a little like that. We wait for permission, for a wizard to hand us a certificate that says we're enough, when really the road itself is the gift. Taking this trip alone was my version of that road. Every small decision, from booking the ticket to walking into that glowing Sphere by myself, was a quiet declaration that I already had what I needed.

As the story says, "The only thing that you have to have is a heart, and the courage to love." I keep coming back to that line. Courage isn't always the roar of a lion. Sometimes it's the soft decision to go somewhere new, to feel deeply, to love people and life even when it risks hurting. I walked out of that theater a little braver than I walked in, the kind of braver that follows you back into real life, into the emails and errands and ordinary Tuesdays.

And so, I'm taking a little piece of Oz home with me. From now on, I'm going to remember, and genuinely believe, that I have a pair of ruby slippers of my own. Not just to protect me from witches, though heaven knows we all meet a few of those along the way, but as a shield and a charm, a little sparkle of protection and good vibes wherever I go. A reminder to click my heels, take a breath, and trust that I'm already carrying everything I need. Bad energy? Not today. Fear of doing things alone? Not anymore. There's a pair of invisible ruby slippers on my feet, and they're going places.

So here's my birthday wish, a little late and entirely sincere: may you give yourself the gift of your own company, may you walk the road even when no one's walking beside you, and may you always remember that the magic was never in the Emerald City. It was in you, the whole time. ❤️✨

The Mountain, The Traffic, and The Friend Who Gets It

I just wrapped up my short break — my little vacation where I flew halfway across the world to spend time with myself. Funny thing is, that "time with myself" was actually spent surrounded by people. Friends I love, friends I like, friends whose voices I could listen to for hours. But that's the paradox, isn't it? Sometimes the most restorative thing you can do for yourself is go see the people who make you feel like yourself.

But that's not what this story is about. Not yet, anyway.

The Drive

Somewhere between Vegas and LA, my friend suggested we skip the fast route and take the long way instead — straight through the mountains. Five hours, he said. I said sure, thinking I'd probably nap through half of it.

I didn't sleep a single minute.

The view was breathtaking — the kind of scenery that makes you go quiet for a second just to actually take it in. I love nature, but more than that, I loved the company. Five hours felt like one. We talked about everything, but one conversation stuck with me more than the mountains did.

We talked about friendship.

On Real Friendship

Somewhere along that drive, we landed on this idea — you know you have a good friend not just because they show up when you're falling apart, but because they can genuinely celebrate when you're winning. That second part is rarer than people think. It's easy to comfort someone in their low moments. It takes a different kind of heart to be happy, without a trace of envy, when someone else is thriving.

I'm lucky. I have that in him.

We didn't just talk about it in theory — we sat in it. Reflected on the friends who've done that for us, and the ones who quietly haven't. It's a strange kind of gratitude, realizing mid-conversation that the person next to you is the example you're describing.

The Next Morning

Fast forward to the next day. Same guy, same road, except now he's driving that route alone — to work, in traffic, dealing with the usual chaos of "lousy drivers." And somehow, mid-frustration, he had a realization and texted me about it.

He noticed some drivers going slow — not because they were bad drivers, just because they had no reason to hurry. No urgency, no rush, just cruising. And when he'd overtake them, it wasn't costing them anything. He wasn't delaying them. He wasn't in their way. He was simply moving at his own pace, in his own lane, toward his own destination.

And yet — some of them wouldn't let him pass. Blocking, speeding up, making it a thing.

He said it felt like a metaphor for everything we talked about the day before.

On Getting Out of the Way

Because isn't that life, sometimes? Someone else moving forward, doing their thing, chasing their pace — and it costs us nothing. Their overtaking isn't our loss. Their win doesn't slow us down. But some of us still can't help but block the lane. Speed up out of spite. Take it personally when someone else simply wants to move a little faster than us, toward a life that's theirs.

The question he was really asking, without saying it outright, was: how considerate are we, really? How conscientious? Are we the kind of people who let others pass — genuinely, easily — because we understand their win isn't a threat to our own road?

That's the same energy as being happy for a friend's success. It costs you nothing to let someone through. It costs you nothing to be glad they're doing well. And yet, so many people grip the wheel a little tighter anyway.

The Fun Part

Here's the part that makes me laugh: this entire reflection — traffic philosophy and friendship metaphors and all — happened over text, with me still mid-flight, somewhere over the ocean, using PAL's inflight WiFi like it was a lifeline. Him fuming at slow drivers on one side of the world, me typing back from 30,000 feet on the other. Different mornings, different time zones, same conversation just... continuing.

Only good friendships can survive on airplane WiFi and still feel like you're sitting shotgun with them, watching mountains go by.

I miss this guy already. But I'm grateful — for the drive, the conversation, and the reminder that sometimes the best life lessons come disguised as traffic complaints on a Tuesday morning.

Until the next tale,

Mariposa 🦋

On Learning Not to Push People Away

There's a strange instinct that shows up in me when I'm hurting — I pull inward, convinced that my pain is too heavy for anyone else to hold. I tell myself I'm protecting the people who love me, when really, I'm just protecting myself from the fear of being too much.

It's my default reflex. It always has been. The moment things get hard, some quiet voice in me says handle it alone, don't burden anyone, you'll be fine. And for a long time, I believed that voice. I thought strength meant closing the door before anyone could see me struggling.

I say all this because I recognize it in you too. I know what it looks like from the inside — the urge to go quiet, to shrink, to convince yourself that pulling away is somehow protecting the people around you. I know it, because it's my instinct as much as it is yours.

But I've learned, slowly and not without resistance, that love doesn't actually work that way. The people who care about us don't need us to be easy. They need us to be honest.

Pushing someone away in our hardest moments never makes us less of a burden — it just makes us more alone in our pain. What changed things for me was allowing people in anyway, even when every instinct told me not to. And what I found on the other side of that discomfort surprised me: it made things easier. Not easy, but easier. Lighter, somehow, just by not carrying it alone.

So,, when I ask you not to push me away, it isn't because I don't understand the instinct to do exactly that. It's because I understand it completely — and I know, from my own experience, that it doesn't have to win.

The people who love you aren't looking for a version of you that has it all together. They're looking for you — whole or falling apart. I'm looking for you, the same way.

So please, don't push me away. Let me stay. Let me sit in the hard, quiet moments with you, even when you don't have the words to ask for it. You don't have to earn my presence by pretending you're fine. You don't have to isolate yourself to be worthy of love — mine, or anyone else's.

I'm still learning this too. Some days the old reflex wins for both of us, and we go quiet, and we pull back. But let this be the reminder we hold onto, together: not pushing each other away isn't a lesson learned once — it's one we keep choosing, one day, one moment at a time.

This way, the essay clearly reads as: I understand this because I live it too — and that's exactly why I'm asking you to let me stay. Want me to make the ending even more direct, almost like a closing personal message rather than a shared reflection?

The Weight and Wonder of Noticing Everything

Some people walk through the world seeing only what's in front of them. I've never been one of them.

I notice the pause before someone answers a question — that half-second too long that tells me something's off. I catch the shift in a friend's texting style before they ever say they're struggling. I feel the change in a room's energy the moment someone walks in carrying something heavy, even when they're smiling. It's like living with the volume turned all the way up on everything.

And honestly? It's beautiful. Because the same sensitivity that picks up on tension also picks up on magic. I find wonder in the way light falls through a window at 4 PM, in the sound of rain settling in, in the small kindnesses people don't even realize they're giving. The world feels alive to me in a way I wouldn't trade for anything.

But I'd be lying if I said it doesn't cost something.

When you feel everything deeply, there's no such thing as a casual interaction. Every subtle tone shift gets processed, analyzed, absorbed. I carry conversations home with me. I replay moments others have long forgotten. Sometimes I know things are changing — friendships drifting, moods souring — long before anyone says a word, and there's a strange loneliness in seeing what others don't yet see. It's exhausting to be the one who's always tuned in, always reading between lines that most people don't even know exist.

I used to wish I could turn it off. Just coast through a day without absorbing everyone's unspoken weather.

But I've come to understand something: this isn't a flaw to fix. It's a lens. Yes, it tires me. Yes, some days I feel like I've lived three days in one. But this same depth is what lets me love fiercely, comfort genuinely, and find joy in things others walk right past. The tiredness is real — but so is the richness.

So I'm learning to rest without guilt. To step back when the world gets too loud. To protect my energy the way you'd protect anything precious.

Because feeling everything deeply means I get to live everything deeply too. And that, I've decided, is not a burden.

It's a gift I'm still learning how to carry — and I wouldn't hand it back for anything.

Christmas Escapade

The Sunday after after Christmas allowed me and the IT Guy some time to explore Bacolod City. We visited few places with a good friend of ours, Hustler.

The first stop was at The Ruins!

This place was owned by one of the prominent families here in Bacolod. It's an old house that they burned down intentionally to prevent it from being used as Japanese headquarter during the Japanese - American War.

Here is the IT Guy with our friend Hustler!

And of course, Mariposa wanting to fly! LOL

Here are my two bodyguards...

After having coffee at The Ruins, we proceeded to Mambukal Resort. It's a hot spring resort...with very affordable but decent cottages.

The kids are playing!!!

All in all it was a very fun Sunday...and we're so glad we found the time. We've been meaning to visit these places since we got here in Bacolod but work always get in the way. It was so worth our time!

If you happen to visit Bacolod, make sure to find time to visit these places...you will LOVE them.

So that's it for my Tuesday's Tales! I hope to being more fun tales in the weeks to come.

Online Shopping Discounts

It's been awhile since I did my last Tuesday's Tales.

I am in my most busy moment right now! So much to do but has so little time. I almost wish we have more than 24 hours but then I might end up working for literally 24 hours when that happens. Arggh!

Anyway I miss shopping. And lately I have so many plans of buying stuff and most of the plans were way overdue and I still couldn't find time for them. So while I am in the middle of my sleep now I will try to shop. LOL

I have been online for minutes and now and get across this savings.com coupons. I figured it could be something nice so I investigated further.Turns out this is my new source of online information to get good shopping deals such as Hewlett Packard coupons and Home Depot promo code.

I used to wonder before how people get these promotional codes and discounts. I feel good to have found this online as I am an online shopper. Despite my busyness and sleepiness at least I have something to smile about today.

And that is my for my Tuesday's Tales today! Wish you all a very happy Tuesday!

Photo Tales

It's Tuesday, and well I have something for you all for Tuesday's Tales!

I've been spending time at home for a week now trying to rest and get better and while I am enjoying it so much at some point I get bored and end up spending more time in the net. While surfing around, guess what I found? Mariposa stumble upon a very cute fun photo maker. To say I enjoy it is such an under estimation! I LOVE it and I'm going crazy trying every photos I have with the different picture effects they have.

Just take a look at what I've got with my photo with my cousin.

Funny Pictures

I couldn't wait sending this to her as I'm sure she will LOVE it and she will LOVE me for it! Ha! Isn't it cool?!

And well knowing the level of energy I have, I did not stop there yet. I did try some of their fun photo editor further and look what I made!

Funny Pictures

I hope the IT Guy gets like it. He is not well and I hope this would at least cheer him up today. And why not, it's too cute not to make him smile, right?

I just LOVE this new discovery and you will LOVE it more because they just don't run out of photo effects simply because they do it add new sets of photo effects everyday! Yes, everyday means new cool fun photo effects. Just COOL!

And finally this one caught my eye. I am so wanting to print this and hopefully the IT Guy will let me this one at his work desk. After all February is just a very short month so maybe displaying this will not be too much! LOL

Funny Pictures

And that's it for my photo tales today. Go try it yourself! ;)

Sinulog 2010

Today I will share to you some tales about the Sinulog which I promise to do last weekend.

Sinulog, perhaps one of the biggest and most famous festivals in the Philippines, is annually held every third Sunday of January in Cebu City. The festival honors the patron Saint of Cebu City, Santo Niño (Holy Child) or the child Jesus. Famous for its forward-background dance movement, Sinulog is a dance ritual that celebrates the natives’ acceptance of the Roman Catholic faith.

The Sinulog dance movement features its infamous two steps forward and one step backward together with the beat of the drums. It is said that the dance movement is just like the water current movement, or sulog, as Cebuanos call it in their dialect; thus where the Sinulog word originates from.

Since 1521 when the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan baptized the Cebuano natives and converted them to the Roman Catholic faith, the Cebuanos have shown much devotion. But the first ever Sinulog parade started on 1980, organized by then Regional Director of the Ministry of Sports, and Youth Development, David Odilao. He then turned over the event to the Cebu City Historical Committee who up to now is tasked to conceptualize the yearly Sinulog festival. Thus, Sinulog 2010 marks the 30th celebration of devotion to the Santo Niño.

The Sinulog festival usually lasts for nine days, concluding on the last day with the Sinulog Grand Parade. For nine days, a lot of activities are usually held, may they be religious-related or social-related activities. Religious-related activities include the nine-day novena and masses held at the Basilica del Sto. Niño church; the Fluvial Procession, which is traditionally held at dawn a day before the grand parade, starts from Mandaue City wherein a pump boat carries a statue of the Santo Niño to Cebu City wherein later that afternoon a street possession takes place; and a Pontifical Mass held on the feast day at the Basilica del Santo Niño church, which is led by the Cardinal and several other bishops of Cebu. On the other hand, social-related activities include Miss Cebu beauty pageant, one of the most prestigious beauty pageants in the country; a series of band concerts on famous hang-out places; fireworks competition at SM City – Cebu held one day before the feast day; a series of fireworks display at Club Ultima, Crown Regency, Cebu City Sports Complex; and the Grand Fireworks Finale Display, which is very popular and is now a tradition at Ayala Center Cebu.

The Sinulog Grand Parade features a street parade and participants from every sector of the Cebuano community dressed in very colorful and bright costumes dancing to the tune of the drums. Because of its popularity not just in the country but all over the globe as well, Sinulog is flocked by tourists from every where. Millions of Cebuanos, tourists, public figures flood the streets of Cebu City every year to watch the parade, dance on the streets, and merely enjoy the event. Every year, the Sinulog festival just gets getting bigger, better, brighter, and more fun.

This year marks Cebu's 30th year of Sinulog celebration.

Happy Tales

Everything today will be about happy tales! Yes, what a better way to do Tuesday's Tales than by starting with an unexpected award?!

Alice Audrey of Alice's Restaurant just shared her Happy 101 Award with Mariposa! WOOT!

Recipient of this award is to list 10 things that makes them happy and pass it to 10 wonderful people who makes them happy!

So today I will be sharing some happy tales...here are 10 simple things that draws a smile in my face and make my heart beat to the tune of happiness.

1. Getting unexpected Blog Awards like this one! I used to get a lot before and I am so happy to start getting one again!

2. Getting nice comments from my readers! It's always nice to hear from readers you know. With all the busyness in life, it just feels good to know that friends stop by and say hello.

3. Spending time with myself and the sunset (sunrise)! I just love them and can't have enough of them!

4. Spending time in the kitchen whether I'm cooking or baking gives me some sense of satisfaction. This is something I just discovered recently though and this is something I can't imagine I'd love doing years back. Every time I am in the kitchen, I just tend to forget all my worries and happy thoughts occupies me...and so far everything I've done in the kitchen has been a huge success! Some people order cakes and pastries from me now. WOOT!

5. Blogging makes me happy! I love to write...about anything and nothing. Sometimes work and health issues get in the way but to find time to make here is such a joy for me. I feel like there is a missing part of me everytime I don't get to blog and read blogs. (Addicted to blogging, ha!)

6. Surprise calls from friends! This would make my heart jumped. It just feels good to be remembered by friends you know and to reconnect with each other is something I just love to do.

7. Coffee makes me happy. Having a cup of coffee with the IT Guy or other friends a bonus. I don't mind if they don't drink it...it just feels so good having good companies at times, and I mean the coffee and the friend. When I don't feel good, I drink coffee. When I am happy, I celebrate with coffee. When I am hopeful, I share it with coffee. Life for me just begins after coffee!

8. Travel makes me happy. I don't care if it's just a long drive or whatever. To get out of the city and go somewhere is just something I always look forward to. I guess my life at work is just too stressful that I need to see some place else to be with my real self. And speaking of travel, I'm going to Grandma's farm this weekend...and I am so excited!

9. Home improvement projects make me happy to no end! I will never run out of energy thinking of ways to improve the house and the garden. I can do as detailed as mixing the paint myself to make sure I get that unique Mariposa touch. I also shop to no end stuff we can use for the house. I am a home buddy...and I feel I have to make my home presentable not just for friends but to myself.

10. When the IT Guy gets to support whatever I am doing without my explaining to him to no end. When he get to appreciate everything that I do without me convincing him. When he readily give some words of appreciation. And when he tells me he cares and love me....specially in moments when I needed to hear them.

Okay...that's it! I figured there are still alot of other things that makes me happy but well, I can put that list up another time. When people ask me what are the things that makes me happy I used to think hard, but anymore. I figured I just have to look at a child and see how he's doing it. A candy bar is enough for him to scream joy. Happiness doesn't have to be grand. And if you think the same way, I'm sharing this Happy 101 Award with you.

Sending you all happy thoughts,

I Have Been To The Edge

It's Tuesday's Tales time once again and yes I am here. I made it! WOOT!

One of the many reasons why I got so busy the past weeks was my friend's visit to Cebu. We did a joint training on Project Management and Total Quality Management. But the tales here will not be about that, but rather the fun we had!

The first day was rather manic thus we decided to end it with a bang! So we went to Crown Regency to have dinner. But then it was not just dinner. I guess we wanted to get so hungry that we had to scare ourselves and tried the Edge Coaster.

I never thought I'd tried it as I've been telling my friends before I will never try it. Ha, never say never so they say...and now I know what they mean.

So what is an Edge Coaster. Will it is that! A ride at the edge of the hotel at the 37th floor mind you! A sure ride of a life. A hell of a ride for me. My friend kept saying it's controlled fear, to me, it's many things...it's when you get excited hovering the city seeing all the buildings and lights and at the same time having that cliff hanger feeling because you are in a seating position, tilted up to 55 degrees and at the edge of the building.

So here is how I look in my first few minutes...

Cameras are not allowed so only them can take photos and you have to pay to get your hard copy. I have to thank Jherlie for sending me this soft copy to post here. I have something more fun, but I still have to ask the IT Guy to scan it. IT Guy missed it by the way because he had some business cocktail to attend to. (Well he told me he will not try it anyway. LOL)

We had to take some poses after that nerve-wrecking experience to settle our senses or we could have ended up eating horses for dinner! Hehehe

Behind us is Cebu!

This was just Day 1. Next week I will share more photos of our Cebu escapade!

Happy Tuesday people!

Mariposa's Tales Turns 4 Years!

Time so fast...Mariposa's Tales turns fours years today. I can't believe it! Oh well...

It was four years ago when I got bored and decided to start blogging. My full intention then was to do an anonymous blog. Most of my early writings for those who've read it showed the writer in me. It also showed the other side of me. The side where I get pissed...hurt...and more importantly the fun crazy side of me. It took me about 2 years to decide to open up and interact with other bloggers. I'd say it's one of the best thing I did. I've met so many wonderful people and I can say that while our interactions were all online I consider all of you as my friends.

Today I'd like to thank you all for welcoming me into you lives. Thank you for all the support you've given me all these years. And more than importantly for sharing your life with me.

This site is such a part of me that I can't imagine losing it. I know I've been absent lately but yet despite my very busy schedule I still try to make it a point to come here. I owe you guys a visit, I know that and I'm going to make sure I get to start my rounds this week. I missed you all so badly. Serious!

I guess this entry qualifies for my Tuesday's Tales too! ;)

After Office Gimmick

It's been awhile since I last posted for Tuesday's Tales. Though I don't run out of tales, I do run out of time and that's the reason for my absence here.

I have spent some of weekends with my staff. Below is one of our first get together...Kristian cooked for all of us...then we tried to drown ourselves with 3 bottles of brandy!

Brandy equals wasted girls!

Ha! What a shame....

And about 2 weekends ago, it's Kristian's birthday and we had a last minute urge to go to the beach...straight from work! It was a Saturday morning...and it was so fun!

This is a small cottage we rented.

We're all fresh from the water here... :)

Mariposa so ready to go home and sleep...LOL

My new job is quite demanding but the fun I share with my staff can't be undervalued. I LOVE them all.

That's it for my Tuesday's Tales...I invite everyone once again to play along...just drop me a comment so I can link you up!

My Bohol Escapade 2009

It's Tuesday...and it's time to tell tales!

Last weekend I went to Bohol and was touring the island with the IT Guy and some of his office mates. IT Guy went ahead since they have business meeting with one of the municipalities in Bohol...I went there Saturday morning with Mom just in time to join the group's tour and spent the weekend with my Grandma.

Our first stop was at Sagbayan Peak!

Next stop was at the famous Chocolate Hills!

Then we visited a Butterfly Garden...the butterflies were so happy to see their Princess Mariposa! LOL

After the butterfly garden we passed by the man-made forest at Bilar!

Then we dared cross the famous hanging bridge!

I never had any fear of heights...but my worry then was I might drop my fave red wallet! LOL

The hanging made us so hungry...good thing our next stop was at the beautiful Loboc River!

We cruised Loboc River and had lunch at their floating restaurants...

After lunch we took a glimpse of the world's smallest monkey, the tarsier! I also saw a flying lemor for the first time!

I'd be honest, I did not enjoy this part of the trip. It pains me to see these creatures not in their natural habitat. I couldn't care less if I don't get to see them live as long as they're living within the comfort of their real habitat.

I was so ready to move to our next stop, the oldest church in the country...the Baclayon church.

There were still other short stops but I was still nursing myself back to health then that I opted to just stay at the van...I was not too eager to see the python...I'm sure it looks sad because it misses its home.

It's was fun...and it was nice to see almost the entire island of Bohol again! My final destination was the the farm of my Grandparents...I'd say there I found peace and was able to recharge and I went back to Cebu feeling way better!

That's it for my Tuesday's Tales...I invite everyone once again to play along...just drop me a comment so I can link you up!
