Cebu Celebrates Sinulog!

As most of you know, I'm from the beautiful island Cebu, Philippines. And though the place has a so much to share...so rich in culture, history, etc. and I still have yet to write about it.

One reason, could be because when I started this blog, it was mainly to be a venue of my rantings and whinings...and though I still get to do that at times, I want to believe this site has evoloved to something so great and it has become so much part of me...this is where I connect to different wonderful people from different places in the world.

So, today, I will try to connect to give a glimpse of Cebu...I'm not sure if I can give any justice to it, and I'm trying anyway...

I will start with something that is so Cebu...and that is Sinulog!

Sinulog -the grandest, the most- awaited and lavishly celebrated festival in the country has just begun!

The Sinulog is an annual festival held every third Sunday of January in Cebu City, Philippines. It is a festival in honor of Sr. Sto. Niño or the Holy Child Jesus. In concept it is like a Mardi Gras. Orignally, it started as a mere street dancing but has evolved into a big event participated by people all over the world!

Sinulog 2008 is under way and as they say, if you're not in Cebu City, you’re missing an explosion of colors, dances and Sto. Niño devotion! A week long celebration, Sinulog 2008 will culminate with a grand parade and street dance this January 20. For the full list of activities, you may check the Sinulog 2008 Festival website.

I promise to expand on this post on Sunday, hopefully with pictures, so you get to see the festivity as it happens...and celebrate it with me!

Pit Senyor! (this is how we cheer/ greet each other during the festival...)

I'm SO excited to read this. But I'm going to come back later, because I'm a little pressed for time right now. I can't wait to learn more about both Cebu and Sinulog!

I also was going to ask you about life in the Philippines because I got a comment from someone the other day which was disturbing. He referred to himself as "Pinoy" and mentioned the political situation there.

I can't wait to see your pictures of Sinulog as I attended Mardi Gras in New Orleans once and loved it.

Baguio City says it's totally better, but what do you expect from them? And now I'm going to go try to find a place to get some poncet(?) and chicken adobo, because I celebrate everything with food.

Pit Senyor! What a cool post and festival! I'm sure you'll have a blast. And here I am sitting in dreary, gray Michigan. ;-(
